Career Options in the Culinary Field

Wherever food is being prepared or served there is an opportunity for a career in the culinary field. When you think about all of the places where food is prepared, served, and consumed these are all areas where you could be happily employed, with just a few months of training. Below are some areas where you could look for a career in the culinary field:

Catering

Caterers and their staff are always in high demand for weddings, meetings, conferences, and other gatherings where it is easier for the food to be delivered and served than to book a restaurant. Working together with the staff of a hotel or conference center you could be in charge of making catering arrangements, preparing the food, or other tasks. If you have a passion for catering, you may find yourself ready to set up your own catering business with a staff to help you.

Caterers have a mixture of cooking and business experience, so if you wish to enter this field make sure that your curriculum strikes a good balance so you have the skills you need to succeed.

Restaurant

There are tons of different positions available in the fast-paced restaurant industry, so if you want to work with food and also enjoy working with people then a career in this field may be the perfect match for you. Get down and dirty preparing dishes as a sous chef, or take over the day-to-day operations as a manager. In between there is assistant chef, head chef, and many other positions.

Cooking positions will require a good handle on food preparation techniques, while a career in restaurant management will need a good handle on business practices. Keep in mind that you will likely have to start at a lower position in order to gain experience and work your way to the top.

Food Preparation

Many other places need help and assistance with food preparation, especially in this day and age where everyone wants their food faster. Hospitals, airlines, managed care homes, and the like all need your help in preparing healthy, well-balanced meals that can be heated up in a jiffy. Become a manager of a food delivery service, or work in the lab helping to create new and delicious meals for the masses.

Any company that makes food needs people like you to help them make their product better, and to come up with new ideas to keep their company in the money. You can be in charge of a whole team of chefs all working towards the same goal: yummy food that the masses will like, which can be prepared at a good price. Imagine working for a big corporation like Kraft or Campbell’s, because you can once you have the right education.

Other Jobs in the Culinary Arts

Can you think of any more places where your skills as a culinary artist can be used? What about cake decorating – making a freshly baked cake look like a gorgeous work of art? And there is always a need for good bakers and pastry chefs to make us our daily bread and those melt-in-your-mouth delicacies like chocolate-filled croissants and éclairs. And don't forget about all the people who help get things ready, for while they may not be in charge they are certainly important in making everything go smoothly.

In short, anywhere you find food you can find a job once you have the right training in the culinary arts. All you need is some training, which you can find in your local area at a community college or even online.
