Choosing an Online Beauty School
Once you have decided that a career in beauty is what you want to do the next step is to choose which beauty school you want to attend. For some, an online school is perfect as it offers flexibility to complete the work when you want to and means you don't have to commute to your campus or move across the country. But how do you go about finding the right online school?
Accreditation
There's not much point in attending any school if the certificate you receive is not recognized, as it won't help you land a plum job. You want to ensure that any school you are looking for is recognized by the National Accrediting Commission for Cosmetology Arts and Sciences, which is in turn recognized by the Department of Education.
It is not only important to find an accredited school in order to secure a job, but to ensure that you get taught well. In order to become accredited the school you choose has to pass some pretty strict standards, so you know you are getting your money's worth.
Range of Programs
If you are the type who likes to dabble in a few different types of beauty regimes then you may want to choose an online beauty school with a wider range of programs so you can test them out, or take them all. The last thing you want is to pay your admission fee to find out that you are limited to only a few courses.
Flexibility
How, when, and for how long are all important questions to answer when you are choosing a school. If you work or have children then you want to have a flexible schedule so you can complete your courses at your own pace. Find out how long you have to finish each section, and whether you can request extensions if needed.
Entrance Requirements
Generally beauty schools have some basic age requirements including a high school diploma or GED. There are also age limitations, so you will have to be at least 16 to sign up. Some schools won't let in anyone under the age of 23. Occasionally there may be additional requirements or tests to take in order to gain admission. No matter what your age or level of education you should ensure that you meet the entrance requirements before you send in your application.
Payments and Scholarships
Any kind of financial help is always welcome, and for some it may make the difference between moving up to a new career or staying put. Look for schools that offer a reasonable payment plan, different payment options, and scholarships that you can qualify for. Don't let the stress of financial problems preventing you from getting the education you need to help you move on to bigger and better things.
Career Placement
Once school is completed you likely are not looking forward to the thought of pounding the pavement to find your first beauty job. Some schools can help you with that, letting potential employers come to them and then matching them up with graduating students. Essentially you can let the perfect job find you, instead of searching yourself.
Hands-On Training
While a theoretical knowledge of beauty basics will get you started, in order to hone your skills you will need somewhere to practice. If you want to become a fabulous beautician, stylist, or spa therapist then you will need somewhere to practice, and volunteers to practice on. See if your online school has local affiliations so you can go somewhere to practice your new craft and become an expert.
