Choosing an Online Business School

Deciding to go back to school can be difficult, but once your mind is made up the process just gets more complicated. Accreditation

You want your degree or diploma to count for something, so before you sign up make sure the school you choose is recognized by a valid accreditation agency. Finding an accredited program is also important if you want financial aid, or think you may need it in the future. Generally you will not be considered for a job if the institution you attend is not accredited.

There are several different agencies in the United States that are responsible for accrediting business programs, including:

• MSA – Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools
• NEASC-CIHE – New England Association of Schools and Colleges
• SACS – Sothern Association of Colleges and Schools
• Western Association of Colleges and Schools

Range of Programs

Many new business students are not sure exactly what type of business education they want to specialize in, which is why it is good to choose an online school that offers a wide range of programs. Usually your first year will consist of programs from different disciplines like management, accounting, finance, and marketing. After the first year most students will choose a major, while others may want to stick to a more generalized approach.

Some schools may also offer other types of specialization such as an environmental focus or courses for running a non-profit organization. If this is something you are interested in then make sure your business school offers the courses, or make sure you can transfer credit to another school sometime in the future.

Flexibility

There's nothing worse than signing up for online courses and then finding out that you can't manage the schedule. Make sure that the school you choose offers classes that meet your needs for flexibility. Can you finish courses at your own pace, or are you expected to hand in assignments on specific dates? Some people prefer the structure, while others like being able to make their school fit more easily around the rest of their life.

Entrance Requirements

Most business courses require at least a high school diploma or GED, so if you do not have one of these you may have to hold off on business school until you graduate. Some schools will allow entrance with a few basic tests such as English and math. Some specific courses may require a C+ or higher in certain high school courses, so check before you sign up. Most adults returning to school will have to complete entrance testing to ensure that their skills are on par with graduating students.

Payments and Scholarships

If you need help paying for school, or even if you don't, it is good to know that help is there if you need it. Ensure your school offers some kind of help with payments such as a payment plan or financial aid, as well as scholarships that you can qualify for. Again, although you may not need the help right away, at least you know it is there.

Career Placement

Once you have completed your schooling what's next? Pounding the pavement for months on end trying to find the perfect job? It would be much nicer if your school offered help in the way of job placement. Many schools will help you meet up with potential employers in order to make the job search as simple as possible.
