Choosing an Online Teaching School

After much consideration you have decided that you want to become a teacher. The next step is to get the necessary education so that you can qualify for jobs as a teacher. For various reasons you have decided to get your education online, and now all you need to do is find the right school. Take your future into your hands and choose a school based on the following criteria:

Accreditation

To become a teacher you first need to complete a bachelor's degree. Before you sign up with an online school you first need to check to make sure that it is accredited, otherwise your new degree may not be worth the paper it's printed on.

There are a few agencies in the United States that are in charge of accrediting bachelor degree programs, including:

MSA – Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools
NEASC-CIHE – New England Association of Schools and Colleges
SACS – Sothern Association of Colleges and Schools

Range of Programs

Depending on what type of teacher you want to be you may be looking for a specific set of programs at the school you choose to attend. For example, if you want to become an English teacher then you will likely have a strong English background to your degree, while a history teacher would want to learn about history. There are also schools that offer specific programs for people who want to become teachers which can help you get ready for your career. Whichever school you choose, at the very least you should ensure that it has a good range of programs so you can complete your degree in the field you choose.

Flexibility

There's nothing worse than signing up for online courses and then finding out that you can't manage the schedule. Make sure that the school you choose offers classes that meet your needs for flexibility. Can you finish courses at your own pace, or are you expected to hand in assignments on specific dates? Some people prefer the structure, while others like being able to make their school fit more easily around the rest of their life.

Generally online schools offer a more flexible timetable for completing classes, but it is best to be sure that your courses will fit into your schedule. Some schools may require that you submit assignments on certain dates, in which case you will have to find time to complete them. Other schools may simply allow you to complete the coursework in a certain number of weeks, and may also allow extensions. Choose the school that offers you the best scenario to let you get your work done, but still have a life.

Payments and Scholarships

Paying for a four year program can be difficult, and you want to get through your schooling without having to sell your organs on the black market. Choose a school that gives you a manageable payment schedule and offers a good scholarship program. Don't forget that there are many other scholarship programs available out there, and some are geared just towards teachers.

Career Placement

Hopefully once you graduate finding a job as a teacher will be pretty easy, but just in case you ideally want the school you choose to offer career placement services. This way you can save some time looking for a job as your school can work with you to match you up with a great employer in your area.
