Ok- so I think I might be a little bit behind the times here, but I have just heard about externships and I think it’s a great idea. Externships are for people looking to further their career with a master’s degree or someone who is looking to change careers completely. What better way to make such a big decision than to follow someone that is already doing what you potentially might want to do yourself?
An externship is similar to an internship, but it has a shorter duration – lasting from two days to a few weeks. Internships are usually for college students who are looking to get academic credit as well as their foot in the door with a company that, in return, is looking for free labor. Well, that’s my definition anyway.
But externships are less extensive than an internship and usually don’t include academic credit as an internship would. It’s a great way to gain insight on the daily life of someone working in a field that you are thinking about entering. Externships are great ways to get informed, to make contacts, and to find mentors.
