I had never heard of home stay externships before reading this article in The New York Times. Job shadowing, I had heard of, but temporarily living with that person as well? That shows an uncommon commitment on the part of the experienced job-holder (not to mention a certain degree of exhibitionism). But more importantly, the short-term arrangement can serve as a reality check for the job aspirant. The idea of a home stay externship earns a two thumbs-up in my book.
