What do you think of when (if) you think of Wal-Mart? Stuff for the house. Stuff for your car? Music? Automobile service? Lawn mowers? Those creepy old people screaming “WELCOME TO WAL-MART!” when you enter the store?
Well, now you can think of Wal-Mart as an innovator in workplace education .
Wal-Mart has recently announced that they would be working with American Public University in order to offer Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club employees college credits.
According to the New York Times article,”The University will offer eligible employees 15% price reduction on tuition, and Wal-Mart will invest $50 million over three years in other tuition assistance for the employees who participate.”
As well as being an enormous bonus for Wal-Mart’s 1.4 million employees, this is a major advance in e-learning and education in the workplace . And while Wal-Mart says that they have no interest in entering the online education field, the largest retail company in the world could be, hopefully, setting new standards for other large companies to invest in employee education.
