Eastern Kentucky University was founded in 1906 and today services over 15,500 students annually. There are over 168 degree programs of study as well as an online course curriculum in the area of safety, security, and emergency management. The university is located in Richmond, Kentucky.

A master's degree can be obtained in safety, security, and emergency management and is designed for working professionals with busy lives and schedules through the distance learning program. The degree program is a 36 hour online curriculum that can be completed in two years and is geared to place graduates at the top of their fields. Topics covered in the master's degree program include legislation and legal compliance, workers' compensation and labor law, auditing, safety, security and emergency management, and emergency preparation and response.

The program provides an emphasis on leadership skills development which enables the students to rise to the top of very specific fields including safety management, emergency management, occupational health and safety, ergonomics, Homeland Security, fire protection, and administration.

The university offers an online educational portal for their students. The log-in portal provides a means to calculate class attendance, homework submission, and grade-check. The professors are able to communicate with each student individually or as a group through the portal. Students are encouraged to interact with each other and participate in online class discussions. Students have direct access to their professors and team members for discussion, grade inquiries, and even tutoring if necessary. There is technical support offered 24 hours a day for students in the event that problems arise in accessing the online portal or submitting online tests or homework.
