Web-based programs are taught by cohort, so students progress with one another through a sequence of core classes, and then select areas of concentration.

The Cohort model offers a number of benefits to the web-based educational experience:

  • Create lifelong relationships with fellow cohort members
  • Enjoy the support and encouragement you will receive from cohort members
  • Utilize your understanding of business concepts in all of your courses
  • Gain knowledge and skills as you progress through a class sequence
  • Work together on one class at a time
  • Fully understand the class progression
  • Plan for your graduation date

At Grand Canyon University Online, we are dedicated to simplifying your online experience. Angel technology is implemented in all of our courses, providing our students with a consistent format. You will enter an Angel tutorial to familiarize you with the online structure at the start of each course. With your account, you will have the ability to look up all of your information, such as your course outline, information about the staff, discussion boards and a digital drop box, where you will put all of your class work that you are assigned.

For every class you sign up for, you should expect to spend 10 to 12 hours each week. With the online coursework designed asynchronously, you have flexibility and convenience of responding to message boards, viewing notes posted by the instructor, and working on projects and research when it suits your schedule.

Your activities will include such tasks as reading, writing, participating in online discussion groups, completing projects, and doing research. Each 16-week semester is divided into two 8-week segments and students take 2 courses during the semester. Classes are targeted. Each class is set up so you only take one class at a time. By focusing on only one class at any time, students are able to take full advantage of all lessons. Every two months, new classes are available.

Students will undertake exams through an electronic system appropriately called Angel. Most classes use other ways to determine your progress, including papers, projects and portfolios of your work.

Classes do not have a specific meeting period, but students are required to log in about four times each week, to interact with the professor and fellow students, and to abide by course deadlines. In an online community students progress through the course as a class and participate. You will interact with the other students in the class, so don't assume that it is independent study.
