Jones International University has its roots in the 1987 cable television network Mind Extension University that enabled over 30,000 students to take courses via television. Glen R. Jones, the founder of Mind Extension and Jones International University officially launched JIU in 1993 and became the first fully online university to be accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.

Within JIU there are two schools: The School of Business and The School of Education. The School of Education offers advanced degrees. The degrees offered are Master of Education, Education Specialist, which qualifies students to become K-12 principals, Doctorate of Education, as well as certificates for certified teachers. Certificates include e-Learning design, corporate training, English as a second language, and literacy.
The School of Business offers a variety of associate's, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in a wide array of business disciplines. Degrees include an Associate in Business Administration, Associate of Science in Digital Media, a Bachelor in Business Administration, a Master in Business Administration, and a Doctorate in Business.
Jones International University Office of Student Affairs offers student services to help students complete their degrees. Student services include career counseling and placement assistance, library services, bookstore services, disability services, and academic advising. Library services include access to several thousand e-books, and hundreds of thousands of research databases. Students also have at their discretion a reference librarian that they can access through chat functions or co-browsing. The library services, including the reference librarian, are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
To assist in financing your education Jones International University offers federal student financial aid in the form of loans and grants. They also offer alternative aid, and flexible payment options. All JIU degrees are accredited and can be completed without visiting a campus since JIU is an online university.
