Northwestern University currently offers an online Master's degree in Medical Informatics. The Master's of Science degree is taught by faculty of the School of Continuing Education in partnership with the Feinberg School of Medicine. The MMI program focuses on bringing digital information into the clinical environment. Graduates of the MMI program will learn the skills needed to fill positions in health care information technology. Independent physicians' practices need consultants to implement and maintain their electronic health records as well as hospitals beginning implementation of COE and integrated delivery systems. Graduates also have the skills to enter the growing field of health information exchange, which includes provider-centric regional health information organizations (RHIOs) and patient-centric models based on the emerging personal health records systems.
Online classes within the MMI program are based upon real world situations and case studies that graduates will face during employment situations. The career based curriculum prepares graduates to face the ever changing environment of health care technology. Classes are 3 credits each and usually require the student to spend 10-15 hours per week per course. Instruction is provided in a variety of mediums to suit different learning styles. Students will complete group and individual assignments and will be required to log in at specific times to complete tasks.
Northwestern offers several support services to the online students of the medical informatics program such as ongoing technical support, academic registration assistance, faculty advising, and disability services.
