University of Florida

The advantage of distance education is that it allows students to access courses in otherwise remote sites, including in their home. Classes may be offered at the same time (with a fixed schedule like the courses on the campus) or offered at various times (with an adaptable schedule). An in person meeting between students and instructors may be required at least once during a distance course.

Even though you will be taking classes through a "distance education program," there may be some on-campus meetings required, for example, orientation, hands-on trainings, residencies, or the graduation ceremony. In contrast to certificate programs, degree programs may have more of these requirements; however, either type of program will not require students to attend in person meetings in excess of 25% of the curriculum.

Therefore, whether you are taking a single course or completing a formal program, as a distance education student you can stay in your hometown, keep your current job, or stay home and raise a family all while working toward earning your degree or a professional certificate. You really need to be self-motivated to succeed in online schooling since you learn at your own pace and at your convenience.

Distance Learning Students often have these attributes:

  • Three quarters work full time or part-time.
  • 75 percent of them are trying to complete a degree.
  • Two out of every three of these students is a woman.
  • Over half of our students are married and have dependents.
  • Fifty percent are 35 years of age or more.
  • Twenty percent of online students are newly enrolled.

What type of technology will I need to be proficient in to take distance education courses?

This is determined according to the course. UF makes use of a wide variety of exciting technologies, including the Web, CD-ROMs, videoconferencing, videotape, and streaming video. Verify the particular technology being used by your college and specifically, by your instructor. To help explain how these are used at UF, we've provided short descriptions of delivery methods.

You will see a deduction for material and supply fees in classes which consume supplies. Information about material and supply fees are available from the academic departments through which those courses are being offered. To obtain specific materials, you must contact the corresponding department or college. They have the supplies or will show you where to go to buy the supplies.
