Vanderbilt University was founded in 1873 by Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, who gave a $1 million dollar gift that led to the university's establishment. For its first forty years Vanderbilt was led by the leaders of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Vanderbilt University offers several degrees including an online master’s of science in nursing and health systems management. The University of Vanderbilt nursing school dates back to 1909 and can now serve students via the Internet. The nursing school is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.

The online nursing master's degree is designed to be completed entirely online so it allows the student to continue working as a health care professional while they earn the degree. Structured to accommodate the working schedules and lifestyles of nurses, students can determine their own study schedule. Learning is asynchronous and the student is not limited by scheduled class times.

VUSN's faculty has developed a curriculum designed to address the current and pertinent challenges faced by health care leaders and executives within an ever-evolving health care industry. This education can be applied to day-to-day operations, enabling the student to be a better manager and leader in the organization. Students acquire clinical experience, strong communication skills, and business acumen.

They also gain knowledge of financial and personnel management, organizational theory, and negotiation. In two years of part-time study, this degree is designed to develop the graduate into an effective and knowledgeable health care manager, providing the opportunity to assume a leadership position in any variety of health care delivery organizations upon graduation.

Student Services are offered to assist the online student with financial aid advising, enrollment and academic advising, career services, and technical support. Technical support is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week to assist learners.
