Vanderbilt University

Vanderbilt University is a private research-based university located in Nashville, Tennessee. It was founded in 1873 by Cornelius Vanderbilt, who made his fortune in the shipping and rail industries. Vanderbilt provided the university with a one million dollar gift in hopes that the school could bring about a positive change in the south after the Civil War. Initially Vanderbilt University was under the auspices of the United Methodist Church but severed its ties in 1914 after several disputes.

Vanderbilt University is comprised of four undergraduate schools and six graduate schools with a total student population of 12,000. The campus is situated on 330 acres of land near downtown Nashville. The university currently offers approximately 70 undergraduate majors that are housed in its four undergraduate schools and colleges: the College of Arts and Science, the School of Engineering, Peabody College of Education and Human Development, and Blair School of Music. The university also has six graduate and professional schools, including the Divinity School, Graduate School, Law School, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, and Owen Graduate School of Management.

Vanderbilt currently offers an online Master of Science in Nursing degree as part of its school of nursing offerings. The degree can be completed by students entirely online with no campus visitations required. The degree is designed for current health care workers to complete the degree without having to leave their current occupation and other commitments. The school of nursing was established in 1909.

The degree prepares nurses and other health care workers to be health systems managers that focus on distributing nursing and healthcare services. The student enrolled in the health systems management degree will learn how to implement standards of quality patient care, mange and evaluate employee work teams, maintain fiscal accountability, collaborate across disciplines and healthcare settings, participate in research, and much more.
